Prayer of Confession
We are a pilgrim people, accompanied by our God,
who journeys beside us, accepting who we are;
yet goes before us, beckoning toward who we might become.

But as we move through our days,
other gods call to us, questions confound us,
direction blurs, indifference lulls; we love our way.
So we enter into silence, to discern again the nearness of God, who is our hope and guide.
silence
Sisters and brothers, we can trust God at all times,
for the Holy One is our refuge and our salvation!
So with confidence, let us pour out a shared confession of our hearts.
We confess to you, steadfast God, that we wander from the path of love upon which we are meant to walk. Fears divide us, prejudice hardens us, violence destroys us.
In this silence, O God, hear now the individual confessions of our hearts.
silence
God of grace and mercy,
Forgive us and guide us to walk more fully in Your ways. Amen
Hear now this assurance:
God's grace is abundant, God's love is never ending.
Friends, the gospel affirms that in Jesus Christ we are forgiven.
May the Peace of Christ be with you.
And also with you.

Second Sunday of Lent

Gathering
Prelude
Welcome
Call to Worship: Psalm 32
Blessed is the one
         whose transgressions are forgiven,
         whose sins are covered.
Blessed are they

whose sin the LORD does not count against them
and in whose spirits is no deceit.
When I kept silent,
         my bones wasted away
through my groaning all day long.
For day and night
         your hand was heavy upon me;
         my strength was sapped
as in the heat of summer.

Then I acknowledged my sin to you
and did not cover up my iniquity.
I said, "I will confess
my transgressions to the LORD "
and you forgave the guilt of my sin.

Therefore let everyone who is godly pray to you
while you may be found;          surely when the mighty waters rise,
         they will not reach them.
You are my hiding place;
you will protect me from trouble
and surround me with songs of deliverance.

Many are the woes of the wicked,
         but steadfast love
surrounds those who trust in the LORD.
Rejoice in the LORD and be glad, you righteous;
sing, all you who are upright in heart!

ENVIRONMENTALISTS and bird lovers might be interested in a presentation on the Tongass National Forest by Stan Senner, Executive Director of Audubon Alaska (also brother of Roberta Hofer and son of Rachel Senner). His presentation is sponsored by the Jayhawk Audubon Society and is scheduled for March 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Trinity Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall at 1245 New Hampshire. Stan is an inspiring and entertaining speaker with extensive knowledge of environmental issues.

ROGER HILL VOLUNTEER CENTER will host a volunteer fair on Tuesday, April 17, from 3-6 p.m. at the Lawrence Public Library. This is an opportunity to learn about hundreds of ways you can help others in our community.

SARAH STUCKY WRITES: Thank you for the directory. I appreciate you thinking of me. I am doing well here in Wichita. School is moving quickly this semester which is great because I can't wait until the summer when I have 2 four week rotations. They should be much more interesting than sitting in a classroom. One of my rotations will allow me to live with my grandparents which they are very excited about. I hope everything is going well with PMC. Perhaps I will get a chance to visit Lawrence sometime. Peace to all.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY needs lunches for the Saturday crews for the next four months. They will need two or three groups to provide lunches each Saturday so that no one group has to provide lunch for more than about 25 to 30 people. Please contact Gwen Klingenberg in the Habitat office if you are able to help provide lunches. 785.832.0777; gwenlawrencehabitat.org.

REMEMBER TO CHECK THE SERVANT BOARD for service opportunities within the church. And much thanks to so many of you who already do so much.

Call to Worship:
Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
Today we enter Holy Week, with its cycle of life, death, and new life.
Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
Jesus, the holy one, the whole one, enters Jerusalem as he rides on the back of a donkey colt. Crowds wave palm branches and cry out,
Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
Jesus, holy one, enter the gates of our hearts today as we join you in this time of your Passion. With you, let us remember and celebrate your birth, your calling, your ministry.
Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
Jesus, our mentor of wholeness, guide us through the streets of our journey. Open our eyes and our ears to the guiding of God's spirit who calls us to costly faithfulness and to joyous wholeness. Let us sing with all our selves.
Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest heaven. Amen.

Opening Poem:
Call to Worship:
Come, people of God and worship the Christ.
Once we were separated from him,
aliens and strangers who did not belong,
without hope and without God in the world.
Once we loved darkness rather than light.
Once we could not sing the Lord's song.
But now we are joined with Christ,
brought near through his blood,
for he is our peace.
Now we who lived in darkness
have come into the light.
Now we who could not sing
have been given a new song.
Let us give thanks to God!
Let us worship the Christ!

Gracious God of all time and all places,
We hold before you this morning our friend Justin.
We thank you for the time he has spent with us and for his music, worship leading, and computer expertiseall of the gifts that he has shared.
We pray your blessing on him now as he moves to a new city for a new job.
Bless him with a new church community in which he can find a spiritual home.
Bless him with new friends and with nurturing relationships with his new neighbors and co-workers.
Bless him with the knowledgein his mind and in his spiritthat your presence of peace goes with him always.
O God, even though Justin will no longer live among us, let us, as a congregation, continue to pray for him and to offer the support and encouragement he will need through this time of transition.
We rejoice in the time we have been able to spend with Justin.
Whatever his future holds, may he always know that he is deeply lovedby You and by us. Amen.

Poem: ``Prayer for Courage''
Our God, we would see Jesus as
the cherished babe lying on the hay,
the energetic healer of Galilee,
the triumphant risen Christ.
We confess that we find it troubling
to speak of Jesus as the humble servant,
calling us to take up a cross.
We hesitate when loyalty to Jesus
means discomfort, inconvenience, suffering, or death.
Forgive our too-easy affirmations;
our noble Sunday-morning intentions
which quickly slide into weekday compromises.
Nurture us in the eagerness of children,
the boldness of prophets,
the vision of poets,
the courage of disciples.
May we continue to trust your promise of a time of peace,
when swords will be beaten into plowshares,
when you will wipe away all tears,
when pain and death will be no more.
May we give our lives in service to that vision,
living with and for others
as if the promise were already fulfilled. Amen.

Great Thanksgiving
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to God.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, O God of life, creator of heaven and earth. And so we thank you this morning for the table you have prepared. Thank you for those who work in the vineyards so that we can drink of this cup.
Thank you for those who work in the wheat fields so that we can eat this bread.
May this meal strengthen us as we work with you to increase justice.
May this meal embolden us to speak the power of peace in the midst of a violent world.
Through Jesus Christ--the Prince of Peace, with the Holy Spirit in your holy church, all honor and glory is yours, almighty Creator, now and forever.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS for Joanna's ordination celebration which will be on Sunday, June 1, at 4:00 in the afternoon. Our conference minister, Dorothy Nickel Friesen, will join us.

THE ROADS WE TAKE: There are many names for the divine, from God to ``higher power.'' There are many practices that people use in an attempt to close the gap between themselves and the ineffable; a short list includes prayer, meditation, nature walks, retreats, journaling, singing, voluntary service. There are also paths that may appear to lead in the right direction that prove to be moving you in the wrong one. What is your path . . . your story? The worship committee invites you to contemplate this and to share your story at church this summer, at whatever length feels comfortable. If you are willing to share, please let us know what spiritual practice you would like to discuss, and if you have a sense of how long you would like to talkanywhere from three to fifteen minutes. You may give this information to the Worship Committee by e-mailing the church (peacemennonitegmail.com) or by writing it out and putting the paper in the suggestion box by the back door. The committee will use the proposals to help structure services this summer. Thank you for considering this request.

MENNONITE CENTRAL COMMITTEE is responding to recent disasters in Myanmar and China. MCC does not have any service workers in Myanmar, but MCC is currently distributing aid through four trusted partner organizations. All eleven MCC workers in China are safe. Watch for details next week and check mcc.org for stories, photos and more information. MCC is raising funds for Myanmar and China. You can contribute through the church by placing money in the MCC jar.

FAMILY WORSHIP will not be held this afternoon. We will schedule a time for playing and planning in June. If you have ideas for a fun group activity, please let Joanna or Rebecca know!

VISION TEAM REPORT: Our first visioning retreat was held on May 3; our consultant, Dennis Koehn, facilitated. We shared stories of the church's past and looked forward together toward the future. (A full summary of the retreat is available upon request.) We will have our second (and final) retreat with Dennis on Saturday, June 14. In the meantime, your Vision Team is working to process information from the first retreat and prepare for the next.
During the first retreat, we were encouraged by the similarities expressed by all participants regarding the church's core values. We have summarized those values as: Centered in Christ; Creating Peace; Working for Justice; Caring for Creation; Serving Others; Nurturing Thoughtful Faith.
We invite you to imagine what Peace Mennonite Church could look like in ten years if we are more fully living out our core values. Please share your grand ideas and dreams on the graffiti board located in the hallway between the bathrooms.

THE TRUSTEE COMMITTEE WILL MEET on Monday, May 19, at 8:00 p.m. at PMC.

THE TRUSTEES WOULD LIKE to thank all those who came out for our Spring Work Day. Your help is much appreciated! Special thanks go out to the Gardening/Landscaping Committee for another garden, and to the Interior Decorating Committee for spiffing up the bathrooms. Thanks to all those who donated the plants, the wonderful design Dena created for our new sign and Matt for framing it. It looks wonderful and lets everyone know we're here.

COME TO HESSTON on June 27-28, where delegates and others from Western District Conference and South Central Conference congregations will be meeting and sharing. The theme of "Bold Witness: Pray with Courage, Share as One" will be developed through sermons, stories and workshops. Registration brochures are now available online at: www.mennowdc.org. Peace Mennonite Church is encouraged to bring two delegates from our congregation. Funds are available in the church budget to help with convention costs for delegates. Please contact Joanna if you are interested in serving as a delegate.

The Great Thanksgiving    Communion liturgy from www.seasonofcreation.com/liturgies/earth/
The Creator be with you and all creation.
         And also with you.
Open your hearts.
We open them to our Creator.
Let us give thanks to our Creator.
It is right to join creation in thanking God .

It is right to give you thanks, loving Creator.
Your Word is the impulse for all things to be,
for space, stars, and stardust to appear,
for Earth to emerge from the deep,
for life to be born of Earth,
and for humans to be born of Earth and the Spirit.

You chose to be born a human being,
to become a part of Earth,
to suffer, die, and rise from death
         to redeem humankind, renew creation,
and affirm all born of Earth and the Spirit.

Your presence is the living impulse in all things,
         the Christ deep among us,
         filling Earthland, sea and air;
         filling every element and place;
filling the grain and the grape
we share with you this day.

Therefore with angels and archangels,
ancient voices in the forest,
high voices from the sky,
deep voices from the sea
and the whole company of creation,
we proclaim your presence among us

Holy, holy, holy, God of all life,
Earth and sea and sky
and all things that exist
are full of your presence
and glorify your name. Amen

         Words of Institution

Invitation
Come, for all things are now ready.

Come to the table with all your kin
and share with all in need
the gift of healing for those in pain,
the gift of forgiveness for those in sin,
the gift of assurance for those in doubt,
and the gift of hope for those in tears.

May we who share these gifts,
                  share Christ with one another
                  and with all our kin.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

You may give this information to the Worship Committee by e-mailing the church (peacemennonitegmail.com) or by placing a suggestion in the box by the back door. The committee will use the proposals to help structure services this summer.

Contact Joanna if you would like to be a delegate.

Eternal Spirit
Earth-Maker, Pain-bearer, Life-giver,
source of all that is and that shall be,
Father and Mother of us all.
Loving God, in whom is heaven.
The hallowing of your name echoes through the universe!
The way of your justice be followed by the peoples of the earth!
Your heavenly will be done by all created beings!
Your commonwealth of peace and freedom sustain our hope and come on earth.
With the bread we need for today, feed us.
In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us.
In times of temptation and test, spare us.
From the grip of all that is evil, free us.
For you reign in the glory of the power that is love, now and forever.
Amen.
